DISINFO: Ukrainian Nazis burn corpses on the border with the DPR
SUMMARY
Facing heavy losses, Ukrainian Nazis have established mobile crematoria on the border between the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Dnipropetrovsk region to incinerate bodies and conceal evidence of the war crimes they have committed.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Ukraine is suffering massive military losses, aiming to demoralise the population, sow division within society, and portray Ukraine as desperate on the battlefield. This is part of a wider disinformation campaign to promote the inevitability of Russia’s victory, and ultimately the need to compromise and accept Russia’s terms.
There is no verified evidence to support claims that Ukrainian forces cremate the bodies of fallen soldiers on the battlefield. Since the onset of Russia’s unprovoked invasion, numerous Russian media outlets have repeatedly circulated allegations that Ukraine engages in such practices. Some of these claims originate from statements made by Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Ivannikov of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, who alleged that Ukraine received 20 mobile crematoriums from Germany. Ivannikov suggested this was an effort by Ukraine to conceal the scale of its casualties and to prevent the spread of disease at the front lines. However, it is important to note that Ivannikov has not provided any concrete evidence to substantiate these accusations. Full debunk available at Myth Detector.
Ukraine and its people are defending themselves against Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression with a remarkable display of courage and determination. Not only Western countries, but a broad coalition of states support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
Furthermore, there is no evidence that committing war crimes is a common practice within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, nor that such actions are encouraged by Kyiv or any Western country. However, Ukraine is investigating more than 34,000 war crimes and crimes of aggression committed by Russia since February. A non-exhaustive list of the Russian Army’s exploits in Ukraine includes the rape and torture of children; massacres of civilians; deliberate attacks against non-combatants; widespread use of cluster munitions in civilian areas; hospital bombings; forced disappearances and torture of civilians; mass deportations to Russia; and attacks on cultural heritage sites.
In addition, the recurrent pro-Kremlin accusation of Ukraine being a Nazi State is entirely false and promoted to justify Russia's full-scale and illegal invasion of Ukraine. See our article The Kremlin’s misuse of Nazism as a weapon of information manipulation.
