DISINFO: Ukrainian spies sabotaged the undersea internet cable to Finland
SUMMARY
The C-Lion-1 undersea fibre optic communication cable, the only one connecting Finland with Central Europe, has been broken. Its length is about 1,200 kilometres and it passes next to the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The reason is currently unknown. An investigation is currently underway.
If one thinks that this has been done by the Russian Federation, then it is not. Most likely, Ukrainian spies went down to damage the Nord Stream and found the cable. Without hesitation, they committed sabotage. The Internet in Finland is now slow, just like the Finns.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative attributing the possible sabotage of the C-Lion1 undersea cable to Ukraine. This is pure speculation, as the investigation has not yet started at the time of writing.
Two undersea fibre-optic communications cables in the Baltic Sea, including one linking Finland and Germany, were severed on Monday 19 November 2024 at 2 GMT, raising suspicions of sabotage.
Additionally, the claim that C Lion-1 is the only cable connecting Finland to Continental Europe is untrue.
As for the Nord Stream sabotage, a media investigative report claims that the German authorities have issued an arrest warrant against a Ukrainian suspect in connection with the Nord Stream explosion on 26 September, 2022. However, the suspect is still on the run.
