DISINFO: Ukrainians hate NATO because it is destroying Ukraine

SUMMARY

Ukrainians hate the head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg and think that NATO is implementing an aggressive policy. They think that NATO destroyed Afghanistan and now will destroy Ukraine too. They see NATO as a toy of the US. NATO does not guard but enslaves Europe.

RESPONSE

This recurring mix of narratives presents NATO as a puppet of the US and accuses NATO of warmongering in Ukraine.

The claims in the article are presented without any evidence. In fact, a poll in October 2022 showed that 83 per cent of inhabitants of Ukraine support the idea of NATO membership.

Ukraine has been cooperating with NATO since the 1990s. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, NATO and its Allies have provided unprecedented levels of support. Some NATO member states provide Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter Article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Ukraine receives weapons with the sole aim of restoring its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
