DISINFO: Ursula von der Leyen’s nomination means the EU’s destruction will continue

SUMMARY

Ursula von der Leyen’s nomination as the President of the European Commission is a spit in the face of all Europeans. Each and any of her actions are in the US interests. Every day of von der Leyen’s leadership means corruption and new humiliations for Europe. The EU’s destruction will continue.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative aiming to undermine citizens’ trust in EU institutions and EU leadership as well as recurring claims about alleged disintegration of the EU and the EU losing sovereignty.

Pro-Kremlin outlets often portray EU leaders and European states as vassals, puppet states, or colonies of the US and NATO. See our analysis of the Kremlin's claims about the EU's lost sovereignty.

The European Union is a sovereign entity, created by the voluntary initiative of European nations, and it has its own, independent foreign policy. Its citizens are directly represented in the European Parliament and Member States are represented in the European Council and the Council of the EU. According to a Eurobarometer survey, which regularly conducts social opinion surveys on behalf of European institutions, a large majority of EU citizens thinks their country benefits from EU membership (April 2024).

When it comes to the “EU’s destruction” claim, as our past analysis explains, the ‘imminent collapse’ narrative is often used in pro-Kremlin outlets in relation to the EU, European countries, or capitalism.

Read our analysis on how pro-Kremlin disinformation ecosystem reacted to the recent EU top political appointments as well as earlier disinformation cases claiming that EU’s disintegration is close due to its anti-Russia sanctions, that Ursula von der Leyen unilaterally banned independent media, and that Ursula von der Leyen is an unelected, omnipotent, authoritarian bureaucrat.
