Through repeated exposure, pro-Kremlin actors seek to present these baseless claims as established ‘truth’. Presenting unsubstantiated allegations as facts, often with minor variations, is a common disinformation technique.
Specific allegations about the presence of these facilities in Ukraine have been refuted by multiple experts, including the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu and by Russian biologists who examined Moscow’s “proof”. Nonetheless, pro-Kremlin disinformation and top Russian officials widely peddle them, even to this day, as a pretext to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a necessary ‘self-defence’ move. The claim that Russia’s invading troops found evidence of these laboratories remains baseless and must be understood under this prism.
The claim that weapons could target individuals based on a ‘Russian passport genome’ is particularly unfounded, for two main reasons. First, the Russian population is genetically diverse and does not constitute a single, clearly defined ethnic group.
Second, the development of weapons targeting specific genomes remains purely hypothetical. Significant scientific challenges remain unresolved, including identifying genetic markers unique to a particular group, designing a pathogen that selectively targets those markers, and preventing mutation, something viruses are prone to, which could render such a weapon ineffective or unpredictable, including for those who created it.
