DISINFO: US reaction to Navalny’s death is interference in Russia’s domestic affairs

SUMMARY

Washington’s reaction to the death of Russian blogger Alexey Navalny is another attempt to interfere in Russia’s domestic policy. The death of a person is always a tragedy. It is very important to figure out all the details of his death. However, US politicians do not want to wait and have already blamed the Russian authorities. Navalny’s death is just an excuse.

RESPONSE

Worldwide criticism of Russia for the death of opposition leader Alexey Navalny is related to Russia's poor human rights record. Navalny, reported dead in a penal colony in northern Siberia on 16 February 2024, was not just a blogger, like the disinfo message claims. He was also, and which is more important, an opposition leader, an anti-corruption activist, and Russia’s best known political prisoner. He was recognised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience and was awarded the Sakharov Prize in December 2021 while being in jail for his work on human rights.

The reaction of US and EU officials to Navalny’s death is aimed at drawing international attention to the suppression of political dissent, police brutality and other manifestations of abuse against opposition-minded Russians. Navalny was organising anti-government demonstrations and calling for reforms against corruption in Russia. In 2011, he established the Anti-Corruption Foundation, a non-profit organisation which investigates alleged corruption by high-ranking Russian government officials including Putin himself and his inner circle. He was poisoned with nerve gas by Russian security agents in 2020. After his recovery in Germany and return to Russia in January 2021, he was arrested at the airport.
