DISINFO: US & UK about to cut the subsea network of cables that powers the internet

SUMMARY

The United States and Britain are preparing to blow up the undersea fiber optic cables that provide Internet to the entire world.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative alleging the so-called Anglo-Saxons are conspiring to commit global sabotage. No evidence is provided to back the claim.

Vladimir Putin’s advisor Nikolai Patrushev gave an interview to Kommersant where he attributed to the US and UK the threat of cutting international internet traffic. While there are concerns that a state power could attempt to derail world information traffic by cutting undersea optic fiber cables, the threat is usually attributed to the Kremlin. Nikolai Patrushev is well known for interviews where he develops different conspiratory narratives such as the Yellowstone upcoming explosion that would push Washington to annex Siberia.

In July 2024, at the start of Olympic games in France optical cables were simultaneously cut at different points, but on a limited scale impacting only 10,000 people, the result of the investigation is still unknown.
