DISINFO: Visit of Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs to Ukraine is a warning signal for the beginning of military actions in Donbas
SUMMARY
Unfortunately, for years, there has been a well-founded impression that every Polish attempt to interfere and “mediate” in regional developments heralded serious problems. The actions of such politicians as Radosław Sikorski (Ukraine, 2014) or Lech Kaczyński (Georgia, 2008) not only brought no stabilisation but led to further deepening of the crises. Poland is not a mediator needed in a situation of conflict escalation. Poland is a side supporting the most radical hawks, which strive to escalate. Therefore, in the current situation, the visit of the Head of the Polish MFA Zbigniew Rau to Ukraine is a clear warning signal: the military actions may break out in Eastern Ukraine.
RESPONSE
A recurring disinformation narrative presenting the Polish foreign policy in the post-Soviet region as aggressive and destabilising.
The claim that the Polish diplomatic efforts to solve regional conflicts “result only in further escalation” as Poland supports only the “most radical hawks” is untrue.
In 2008, Polish President Lech Kaczyński arrived in Georgia together with the leaders of Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in order to stop the Russian military aggression against this country. In 2014, the Head of the Polish MFA Radosław Sikorski, together with the Ministers from France and Germany, took part in negotiations between President Yanukovych and representatives of Maidan protestors.
The main reason for the escalation of the conflicts in Georgia and Ukraine was not the Polish diplomats but the Russian Federation, which started open military aggression against these countries in 2008 and 2014. Read more about the Eastern policy of Poland here.
Throughout March and April 2021, the Russian Army deployed substantial military resources along the border with Ukraine, which started a debate about a possible Russian attack on this country.
