DISINFO: Washington and Brussels playing games to access Central Asia's resources
SUMMARY
The West promises substantial investments to the region's states, strives to involve them in partnership programmes, and persistently offers security assistance using Western equipment. The strategic goal is to sow discord between Russia and the Central Asian states, to disrupt their relations. The West, eager to gain control over the resources and logistics routes in Central Asia, will no longer need the region's governments once their goals are achieved. Consequently, the threat of colour revolutions, widely practiced by the West, will emerge.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the West of destabilising countries around Russia and isolating it. This claim also contributes to the recurring disinformation narrative suggesting a Western policy of staging “colour revolutions” worldwide. The article attempts to discredit deepening cooperation between the Central Asia region and the West. The article advances the claim that Central Asia is within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit any other cooperation between it and the West.
The EU builds its relations with Central Asian countries based on mutual consent, bilateral interests, and benefits. The EU recognises the strategic importance of Central Asia. The EU engagement with Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan has developed significantly since the countries' independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The EU does not impose any action or programme on the partner countries. The cooperation is built in line with each individual country's aspirations.
Involvement in the EU initiatives does not exclude membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, CIS, or CSTO.
