DISINFO: West is attempting to force Georgia into a war against Russia

SUMMARY

The West is making another attempt to force Georgia into a war with Russia. According to Georgian government sources, ‘radical and extremist organisations, most of which are financed from abroad,’ intend to turn the elections taking place in the country into a coup d'état. According to experts, these local elections are Europe's last chance to open a ‘second front’ against Russia before the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2028 in Georgia.

It is well known that the West is dissatisfied with the current Georgian government because it refuses to get involved in a military confrontation with Moscow.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the West of anti-Russian policies, Russophobia and an allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda trying to encircle Russia. Since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin outlets have actively promoted a disinformation narrative falsely claiming that the US, the EU, or even Ukraine are attempting to drag Georgia into the war with Russia, supposedly to open a ‘second front’ against Moscow. See our article Russian scripts, Georgian voices: How disinformation targets the country’s Western allies: the US, EU, and UK in Georgia.

The October 4, 2025 municipal elections in Georgia resulted in a sweeping victory for the ruling Georgian Dream party, which secured over 80% of the nationwide vote and won majorities in all 64 municipalities. Most major opposition parties boycotted the elections, citing a repressive and undemocratic environment and protests have broken out.

EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos have commented on Georgia’s October 4 local elections, describing them as taking place amid an extensive crackdown on dissent.

Months of raids on independent media, the passing of laws targeting civil society, the jailing of opponents and activists or amendments to the electoral code favouring the ruling party, drastically reduced the possibility of having competitive elections. A large part of the opposition boycotted these elections, and the turnout was relatively low. [...] The refusal by the Georgian authorities to invite international monitors in due time, in particular OSCE/ODIHR, undermined the transparency of the electoral process and prevented credible international monitoring. Domestic organisations also refrained from observing due to the repressive environment."

The piece also promotes pro-Kremlin disinformation that the West is attempting to destabilise the South Caucasus to open a second front against Russia. This is also a false claim, which has been debunked repeatedly.
