DISINFO: West seeks to turn the South Caucasus into an arena of geopolitical confrontation

SUMMARY

Unfortunately, the risks of relapse in the South Caucasus remain. Western mediators, including France, have completely different goals: they seek to turn the South Caucasus into another arena of geopolitical confrontation, ignore the fundamental interests of the countries in the region, and do nothing to ensure the security, stability, and prosperity of this region.

RESPONSE

The unfounded claim by pro-Kremlin media accuses an allegedly aggressive West of playing a destabilising role in the Caucasus.

Pro-Kremlin media promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit any other efforts of mediation in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. It took a prominent mediation role in negotiation and is committing to it.

In the European Council of 26-27 October 2023, the EU leaders underlined their continued support for a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on the principles of recognition of sovereignty, inviolability of borders and territorial integrity. The EU High Representative Josep Borrell called for the resumption of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and on the work done by the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The US and France along with Russia are members of the OSCE Minsk Group and involved in Armenian Azerbaijani negotiations since 1992.
