DISINFO: Western Support for Ukraine is a rehabilitation of Nazism

SUMMARY

What is happening now is nothing more than an extension of NATO's military strategy against Russia as the heir to the Soviet Union. It is also an extension of what happened during World War II, after the Soviet Union inflicted a crushing defeat on the old Nazism. All the "political" measures of the European Union, the attempts to falsify history, equate Nazism with communism, remove monuments, and insult the memory of World War II heroes, are nothing more than a rehabilitated Nazism. This relentless economic, media, social, cultural, and artistic war against everything Russian is crowned by the racist, anti-Russian sentiment "Russophobia" spreading like wildfire in Europe. How similar the fascism of Hitler and Mussolini is to the support and defense of Zionist fascism taking place today in Ukraine and Israel.

RESPONSE

This message promotes several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives, including the false claim that NATO is waging a military campaign against Russia, that the EU is “rehabilitating Nazism”, and that Europe is gripped by systemic Russophobia. It also falsely equates current political support for Ukraine with historical Nazism, while linking unrelated conflicts (Ukraine and Israel) into a single conspiratorial narrative.

Pro-Kremlin outlets repeatedly talk about the “revival” of Nazism in the West. Labelling Russia’s adversaries as Nazis is a widespread pro-Kremlin disinformation technique, and has been used by Russia to justify the invasion of Ukraine by portraying it as a “denazification operation”. Russia spent years preparing the information battleground before its kinetic attack, with “Nazi Ukraine” being one of its most prominent disinformation tropes.

The EU was founded after WWII to promote peace, democracy, human rights, economic cooperation, social justice and cultural diversity. The EU founding treaties emphasise economic cooperation to prevent future wars. Founders of the EU, such as Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, and Konrad Adenauer, were all active opponents of Nazi Germany. The EU project itself was part of their work against Nazism, believing that by establishing a political and economic union between European countries they can ensure that ideologies such as Nazism never rise again.

Russia has systematically sought to revise history to instil a deceptive misperception that only Russia fought against Hitler in World War II and draw manipulative parallels with Russia’s present-day aggression against Ukraine. See our series of articles about historical revisionism and world War II.

Pro-Kremlin media outlets are also known for manipulating historical events to promote the narrative that Western countries have, for centuries, formed an anti-Russian alliance. In doing so, they often ignore past conflicts and rivalries among these nations and conflate modern-day Russia with both the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire in a historically questionable manner. See our article Rewriting history: the myth of Russia’s invincibility.

Finally, the ongoing war in Ukraine was not launched by or is continuing because of the NATO. Russia is the only country responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. It was Putin’s personal decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since WWII. Russia has been coming up with different explanations and pretexts for its aggression since the beginning of its hostilities.
