DISINFO: Western totalitarianism has reached a new level with cancellation of Romanian elections

SUMMARY

The cancellation of the first round of the Romanian presidential elections without any real reasons indicates that Western totalitarianism has reached a fundamentally new level. The powerful manipulation machine is beginning to malfunction, and now European “liberals” are ready to simply ignore the will of the people. Having learned from the experience of independent Hungary and Slovakia, Eurocrats do not want to repeat such mistakes and are untying the hands of local politicians loyal to them for any lawlessness. Moreover, the first “test" in this sense was Moldova, where Maia Sandu proclaimed herself head of state on the basis of an unclearly conducted diaspora vote.

RESPONSE

A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claims that constitutionally and democratically elected state authorities are not independent, but under Western control.

The first round of the presidential elections in Romania, which took place on November 24, 2024 and was won by candidates Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi, was cancelled by the Constitutional Court of Romania who invoked many reasons. In its decision taken on December 6, the Court noted (p.11): „The main aspects imputed to the electoral process regarding the election of the President of Romania in 2024 are those regarding the manipulation of voters' votes and the distortion of equal opportunities for electoral competitors, through the non-transparent use and in violation of electoral legislation of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the conduct of the electoral campaign, as well as through the financing of the electoral campaign from undeclared sources, including online”.

In the case of Moldova’s president Maia Sandu, no violations of electoral law or manipulations were discovered regarding the poll on October 20. The Constitutional Court recognised the election results as legitimate. While according to the OSCE’s International Election Observation Mission these electoral processes “were well-managed and contestants campaigned freely”, it also noticed “an environment characterised by concerns over illicit foreign interference and active disinformation efforts”. It was Russia, not the Moldovan government, who tried to alter the results of the Moldovan election through a series of measures such as disinformation campaignsbuying votes, training Moldovan citizens in paramilitary camps to stage protests, and busing voters to overseas polling stations. As this did not achieve the results expected by Moscow, pro-Kremlin outlets and Russian officials launched disinformation narratives about electoral fraud.
