The claim is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign in Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It also attempts to portray Ukraine as a Western puppet state. It seeks to paint the Ukrainian government and the UK as careless warmongers.
The statement was made after the meeting between the Ukrainian leader and US President Trump at the Oval Office on 28.02.2025. As a result, the 'rare earth minerals' deal was not signed.
This claim is not backed by any evidence. Western nations have always called for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to problems with Russia while upholding the rules-based international order. Moscow’s aggressive policy has led to a tougher and better-balanced policy toward it by the West.
Despite the outcome of the meeting on 28.02.2025, the UK and France are willing to work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting with Russia - and will then discuss that plan with the US. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready to sign a minerals deal with the US, which is a step towards helping to end the conflict in Ukraine. The UK has announced a £1.6bn missile deal for Ukraine, following a summit of European leaders in London.
Russia is the only country responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. It has been coming up with different explanations and pretexts for its aggression since the beginning of its hostilities. Moreover, Russia was not forced to invade Ukraine. It was Putin’s personal decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since WWII.
Western leaders have repeatedly expressed their desire for peace, but emphasise that it must be a just peace that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Pro-Kremlin disinformation has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
