DISINFO: Zelenskyy is fighting against Russia for the Anglo-Saxon domination over the unipolar world
SUMMARY
November 5 has arrived, and soon we will know the Americans' choice. It just so happens that outside of America, no fewer people are waiting with bated breath for the results of the US presidential election than in the States themselves. Maia Sandu, the President of Moldova, Salome Zurabishvili, the President of Georgia, and the [Armenian] incomprehensible president are also very much hoping for a victory for the Democrats.
But the first on the list of those waiting with trepidation is probably the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been fighting Russia for the third year now at the cost of the lives of his fellow citizens in the name of the triumph of ideas of Anglo-Saxon domination over the unipolar world.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative alleging that Ukraine is a “springboard" and a Western "tool" against Russia. This recurring disinformation claims that the US and so-called "Anglo-Saxons" are fighting a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, and that Ukraine is just a pawn in this war.
The piece also contains a conspiracy theory accusing the so-called “Anglo-Saxons” of using the war in Ukraine to achieve domination over the world. The term “Anglo-Saxons” in such cases normally stands for the US and UK and often means “evil”, “belligerent” and “morally corrupt” Westerners, as explained in our earlier analysis. As a negative catch-all term, it is a useful building block for pro-Kremlin conspiracy theories. You can find plenty of examples in our database.
This narrative aims to frame Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as a confrontation with a Russophobic and belligerent Western nations. Neither the UK nor the US nor any European countries have pushed Ukraine to war with Russia, or want to escalate the war in Ukraine. President Zelenskyy did not start the war against Russia. It was Putin’s personal decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since WWII.
The claim aims to deflect any Russian responsibility for the full-scale invasion, which began on 24 February 2022. The Russian war against Ukraine began in 2014 with the illegal Russian annexation of Crimea and Russia's military involvement and support of separatists in Donbas.
The Ukrainian state is under attack by Russia. Ukraine and its population are defending itself against this armed aggression in a remarkable display of continued courage and determination. This is not a decision by NATO, Washington, the EU, or others. The US, the EU and NATO condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked.
Not only the Western but also many other nations around the world support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, under the UN Charter article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
By falsely affirming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy follows US orders, these narratives attempt to denigrate Ukraine by portraying it as a non-independent Western puppet, one of the many long-term pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives on Ukraine. Russian and pro-Kremlin disinformation sources like to claim that certain countries are no longer truly sovereign. See our article ‘Lost Sovereignty’ here.
