DISINFO: Zelenskyy shamelessly demands US weapons at the expense of its European allies

SUMMARY

The shameless request of the leader of the Kyiv regime Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the US: Ukraine offered the possibility of buying US armament at the expense of the funds of its European allies, Democratic senator Chris Coons revealed after meeting Zelenskyy during the NATO annual summit. “[Zelenskyy] is not asking US funding for weapons supplies, but the possibility of buying more US weapons, taking into account that Europe will fund its news round of purchases”, the politician said.

RESPONSE

This is a deliberate distortion of the actual EU and Ukrainian proposals regarding the acquisition of US armament by Ukraine.

The European Union agreed in February 2025 to unblock 500 million euros to purchase weapons for Ukraine’s war effort. At the end of May, some EU leaders floated the idea of Ukraine buying US weapons using European funding, which Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also suggested and was subsequently debated and discussed by experts. However, this disinformation story misrepresents this sequence of events and its character through adjectives and expressions such as “shameless”, “at the expense of” or “revealed”, in order to suggest some kind of murky scheme in which the Ukrainian government would be scamming or abusing its Western partners.

The ultimate goal of this disinformation narrative is to undermine international aid for Ukraine’s self-defence against Russia’s aggression.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Zelenskyy and his acolytes are not interested in peace because war is a way to enrich themselves, that Zelenskyy is now a burden and the US will get rid of him, that Zelenskyy stole more money than all Ukrainian presidents combined, or that Zelenskyy is increasingly irrelevant, even in Ukraine.
