Figure of the Week: €110 million

The United Kingdom has earmarked over €110 million to fight disinformation in Eastern Partnership countries.

British Prime Minister Theresa May made the pledge at the Eastern Partnership summit, held in Brussels on 24 November. The sum is to be spent over the next five years.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Mrs May called on European leaders to be “open-eyed” about Moscow’s actions and warned of the threat to the potential growth of the Eastern Neighbourhood.

Already on 13 November, Prime Minister Mays had stated that Moscow was “seeking to weaponise information” and was using its state-run media outlets to plant fake stories aimed at sowing discord in the West.

These warnings come amid revelations that Russian-based Twitter accounts posted a huge number of messages promoting Brexit in the run-up to the referendum.
