European elections

On 6-9 June, EU citizens will elect the members of the next European Parliament. Many other elections are also taking place this year, with almost half of the world’s voters making important decisions at the ballot box. Information manipulators see elections as an opportunity to advance their own goals by smearing leaders, exploit existing political issues, sow distrust and erode the credibility in the democratic system and its institutions. We observed their tactics in previous elections: Flood the infospace with falsehoods, leak stolen information, carry out disruptive cyberattacks, and many more.

Disinformers play a long game and may use assets that have taken years to prepare. They want to weaken the EU and its member states, turn public opinion against supporting Ukraine and other democracies and divert attention from failure in their own authoritarian regimes, including suppression of independent voices.

At EUvsDisinfo, we know about foreign information manipulation and interference in the election context. We have been following different disinformation narratives, tactics, techniques and procedures for years. This section will shed light on some of them.

Cases in the EUvsDisinfo database focus on messages in the international information space that are identified as providing a partial, distorted, or false depiction of reality and spread key pro-Kremlin messages. This does not necessarily imply, however, that a given outlet is linked to the Kremlin or editorially pro-Kremlin, or that it has intentionally sought to disinform. EUvsDisinfo publications do not represent an official EU position, as the information and opinions expressed are based on media reporting and analysis of the East Stratcom Task Force.
