The Kremlin’s tall tales: a Christmas countdown

As 2024 draws to a close, EUvsDisinfo took a holiday-inspired, yet sobering look at the some of the Kremlin’s more outlandish disinformation. As a special, once a year treat to our followers on Bluesky, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), we unwrapped one bizarre claim each day.

The oddities, absurdities and flat-out lies knew no bounds. From the Kremlin’s agents of manipulation claiming that Russia created Belgium, to grizzly tales of fictional horror that posh Western restaurants serve human meat. These examples showcase the Kremlin’s absurd disinformation narratives, historical distortions, and outright fabrications aimed at shaping perceptions and sowing division.

This year alone, our database surpassed 18,000 examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation. Whether spinning tales of “endlessly happy” Russian women or accusing Eurovision of anti-Christian immorality, the Kremlin’s propaganda machine churned out a unique mix of absurdity and malevolence.

This calendar aimed to expose the ridiculousness of these lies while underscoring the dangers of information manipulation and disinformation. Each post is a reminder to question, verify, and not be deceived by the Kremlin’s lies.
