Hard look in the mirror
It is high time the Kremlin took a long, hard look in the mirror instead of spinning fantastical fabrications about Russia’s supposed grandeur and invincibility.
As we have stepped into 2025, the Kremlin continues to repeat its well-worn script: triumphalism, deflection, and denial of reality. As exemplified in his New Year’s address, Vladimir Putin once again promised strength and better times ahead, even as his full-scale three-day invasion of Ukraine nears its third anniversary.
Yet, instead of any signs of serious introspection, Putin and Lavrov’s deceiving rhetoric continues to peddle fabrications about economic resilience, public support, and territorial ambitions. The Kremlin’s refusal to face reality continues an unbroken tradition of disinformation, one that EUvsDisinfo has tirelessly documented over the years (see, for example, here and here). However, the only reflection Putin and his inner circle seem capable of is in the false mirror of their own propaganda.
California tragedy gets a Kremlin spin
As California battles devastating wildfires, pro-Kremlin disinformation outlets have cynically seized on the tragedy to propagate false narratives aimed at undermining international support for Ukraine.
One particularly egregious claim alleges that eight luxury mansions owned by Ukrainian generals were destroyed in the fires—purchased, they say, with funds meant for Ukraine’s defence. This fabrication originated from a pro-Kremlin Telegram channel and was amplified by disinformation outlets, such as the Pravda network, using digitally doctored images to lend credibility to the story. By exploiting the wildfires, the Kremlin attempts to reinforce a recurring lie that Ukraine’s leaders are corrupt and undeserving of Western aid.
Another strand of disinformation focuses on falsely linking California’s wildfire response challenges to support for Ukraine. False claims that firefighting equipment donations to Ukraine left California unprepared have been thoroughly debunked. Experts have confirmed that factors such as water shortages and extreme weather, not equipment donations, are to blame for the crisis.
Furthermore, the claims that budget cuts for California firefighters diverted funds to LGBTIQ+ initiatives and Ukraine are false – another Kremlin attack targeting vulnerable communities. These distortions serve to distract from the role of climate change in exacerbating natural disasters while stoking divisions within US society and attempting to erode US support for Ukraine.
Track record of exploiting human misery
Pro-Kremlin propagandists do not shy away from exploiting natural disasters and real human suffering to advance their goals, as seen in past cases involving wildfires in Hawaii back in 2023, Hurricane Helene and Milton, and floods in Poland last year.
The raging Californian wildfires are the latest target of this strategy, with the Kremlin spinning false narratives to discredit and discourage sending international aid to Ukraine and shift focus away from its aggression. In stark contrast to the Kremlin’s flame-fanning narratives, Ukraine has responded to the wild fires with empathy and solidarity, offering to send firefighters to California to assist in combating the fires.

Also blinking on EUvsDisinfo’s disinformation radar this week:
- In an effort to frame Belarus as a victim of Western aggression, pro-Kremlin outlets are spreading absurd claims that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been ordered by the West to drag Belarus into the war. In reality, it is Russia that has drawn Belarus into its unprovoked war against Ukraine. From the outset of the invasion, Belarus has acted as a key enabler of Russian aggression, providing logistical support and serving as a launchpad for attacks against Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine has consistently called for Belarus to remain neutral, emphasizing its commitment on defending its sovereignty rather than escalating conflicts. Disinformation narratives like this not only propagate the broader disinformation trope portraying the West as belligerent but also aim to strip Ukraine of its agency, falsely portraying it as merely a puppet of Western powers.
- Pro-Kremlin outlets have distorted a Politico article to claim that aid to Ukraine has crippled Denmark’s defence capabilities. This manipulation relies on cherry-picked sentences from the original piece, stripped of context and twisted to align with pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives. The actual article primarily highlights the disparity between U.S. and Danish military forces, referencing a public spat over Donald Trump’s remarks on Greenland. While the article briefly mentions Denmark’s military aid to Ukraine as one of several factors impacting its defence capabilities, it never states that ‘Ukrainian aid crippled Denmark’s defence.’ Such distortions are a well-known tactic in the pro-Kremlin disinformation toolkit, using legitimate Western sources to lend credibility to false narratives. In this case, the goal of the manipulation is clear: to attempt to undermine international support for Ukraine’s self-defence by portraying it as harmful to donor countries.
- In a yet another blatant attempt to smear top EU leaders with Nazi slurs, pro-Kremlin outlets have falsely labelled European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a ‘Reich Gauleiter.’ This accusation is part of a broader Kremlin propaganda effort to falsely associate its adversaries with Nazism, a tactic used extensively to justify its invasion of Ukraine as a so-called ‘denazification operation.’ The claim not only aims to discredit von der Leyen but also seeks to discourage popular support for Ukraine’s defence. Such narratives are especially cynical given the EU’s founding principles of peace, democracy, and cooperation, which were conceived after World War II specifically to prevent the resurgence of ideologies like Nazism. Far from supporting such ideologies, EU founders such as Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, and Konrad Adenauer were resolute opponents of Nazi Germany, shaping the Union as a safeguard against its return.
